Unlock sculpture

The 'Unlock' sculpture sits adjacent to the Leeds & Liverpool canal overlooking Pennington Flash near Leigh. In collaboration with sculptor Thompson Dagnall, the lock gates are set out as a book to represent the rich history of the local area. Each leaf symbolises the unlocking of the previous mining heritage, the history of the canal itself, and the now regenerated flash with its wide range of ecology and biodiversity.
Following development of the concept designs by the sculptor the project included preparation, submission and successful approval of associated planning permission. Additional landscape features within the project included bespoke seating created out of lock gate handles and winding gear carved with extracts from a local poem 'Greenheart - northern soul'.
