The primary design thread was a concept of palimpsest, that reflected and celebrated the rich historical background of Gloucester through the building up of layers to define the character, materials and form. The analysis of the data presented the opportunity to explore and exploit the potential of integrating a landscape into the built environment. The strong desire line diagonally across the space was reflected with a linear paving section aiming to move people into the building and onto the public square. The landscape design objective was to be sensitive to the existing site context whilst providing an attractive and accessible link to the Ty Dewi Sant lecture theatre building. The aim is to create a representation of the mountainous region in which the endangered species live and offer visitors a nose to nose visual experience though glass.
